How to fix my Razer Blade when it freezes or locks up

| Answer ID: 1459
This article provides the steps to prevent your Razer blade from freezing, locking, or lagging.

Your Razer Blade has been designed to handle the most intensive games and tasks with ease. However, due to things like software issues, wear and tear, or even viruses, hiccups like freezing or locking up can still happen.

You can view the video below for instructions or review a copy of the video transcript.

Below are some tips to prevent the Razer Blade from freezing or locking up.

Select an action

Plug in laptop into the power outlet

Make sure the laptop is plugged into the power outlet. Use the power adapter that was shipped with the laptop.

Adjust the polling rate of your mouse

Try lowering the polling rate of the mouse connected to your PC. See My PC and games are lagging when I set my mouse to a high polling rate for details.

Update Windows

Ensure Windows is up to date. See How to get the latest software and driver updates from Windows for instructions.

If you just updated Windows, install the "Optional updates" under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.

If you're still experiencing the same issues, the problem may be due to an incompatible driver. In such cases, rolling back to the GPU drivers available through Windows Update may resolve the issue. See How to roll back GPU drivers via Windows Update for more information.

Disable undervolting or overclocking

Note: This applies only to Razer Blade models that support overclocking or undervolting via Razer Synapse.

To know which Razer laptops support overclocking or undervolting, check the "Applicable models" found in How to overclock or undervolt a Razer Blade with Intel processor via Razer Synapse article.

  1. Open Razer Synapse.

  2. Go to “PERFORMANCE”.

  3. Toggle off or disable “CPU OVERCLOCKING”.

End suspicious programs or processes via Task Manager

If your Razer Blade seems to freeze often, use Task Manager to observe what programs or processes may be causing it. Once you have pinpointed the culprit program or process:

  1. Right-click then select “End task” to kill the process.

End Task option on the Task manager window

  2. If you cannot access the Task Manager, force shut down the device by holding the power button for three to five seconds. Power on your device again and see if the issue persists.

Uninstall suspicious apps or programs

Uninstall the app or program that you spotted earlier as the culprit behind the issue and see if the freezing persists.

Review the computer’s reliability

Review your computer’s reliability using the Microsoft Windows Reliability Monitor. See How to review PC reliability via Microsoft Windows Reliability Monitor for instructions.

Perform Random Access Memory (RAM) test

Test the computer's Random Access Memory (RAM). See How to use the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool for instructions.

Perform a Startup Repair

  1. Click on the “Start” icon.

  2. Click on the “Power” icon and press and hold the “Shift” key then click “Restart.”

  3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair when the laptop restarts.

  4. Wait until the repair process is complete. This will take about 15 minutes or more.

Perform a complete scan with antivirus software

Run your antivirus software and do a complete scan. Some viruses or spyware can cause performance issues. Windows Defender comes with Windows 10 out of the box. Alternatively, use a third-party antivirus software if you have one, but make sure it also runs regular updates.

Perform a system recovery or a factory reset

Perform a system recovery or a factory reset if the above steps do not solve the issue. See the answers below for more details.

Enable High GPU in Razer Synapse

  1. Open Razer Synapse, go to "SYSTEM" > "PERFORMANCE".
  2. Click the "Custom" option under "PERFORMANCE MODES".
  3. Select "Boost" for "CPU" and "High" for "GPU".

Note: Ensure your Razer Blade is plugged into a wall outlet using the original power adapter.

Retrieve BSOD error codes

Blue Screen of Death or BSOD occurs when Windows encounters a critical system failure. When this happens, the system reboots right away or after a few seconds which makes it difficult to read or gather the whole information. However, details about the crash are recorded and can be retrieved.
